Down the Strand by Dan Kirmatzis (Collated Observations 08)
For volume 08 in our zine series we’re delighted to present a candid 35mm monochrome project capturing the life on one of London’s most famous streets – the Strand. Dan Kirmatzis is a London based photographer specialising in portraiture and people whose impressive portfolio includes portraits of Sir Michael Caine, Danny Boyle, Annie Leibovitz & Sir Trevor McDonald to name but a few.
"The famous American photographer Garry Winogrand is quoted as saying, “When I’m photographing I see life. That’s what I deal with.” For my documents of life on London’s streets I also see life, but often I’m photographing those moments which are overlooked. There are many ways to photograph the street – just pick up a book on street photography – different styles and genres of the same medium. But for me I’m looking for little happenings. Two lovers about to kiss – the camera capturing not the event but the moment before it happens. The half-smoked cigarette – the moment in between being drawn and waiting for its fate – the pavement below. The woman on the bus bathing in the sunlight on a cold winter’s day or the man standing still – we will never know what they were thinking but the camera allows us to document these fleeting moments – and as a body of images they are witness to those aspects of life that we so often only retain for a mere fraction of a second as we walk down the street – these are not memorable events but when recorded by the camera they become a document to the ignored and overlooked aspects of life’s ebb and flow."
