Brighton +/- by Jules Carr (Collated Observations 09)
Our final Collated Observations photozine for 2020 features a project by Surrey based photographer Jules Carr. In 'Brighton +/-' Jules explores the backstreets and promenades of this coastal city by both day and night, observing space, light and mood.
"Brighton, or London By The Sea as it is sometimes known, has been a part of my life since I was a small child. Living as I do sandwiched between London and the South Coast, I’ve developed a strong emotional connection to it which continues to draw me back there time and time again.
It is a place of marked contrasts; vibrancy and stillness: the unusual and the banal; historic buildings alongside amusement arcades. A city with an ever changing atmosphere. I find myself drawn to the architecture, the still and empty places, and the slight seediness and elements of decay beneath the patina of the traditional English seaside.
By night, Brighton is perhaps at its most intriguing. It takes on a theatrical feel and I see stage sets and actors. Hidden corners spring into life in rich colour and luminance. "
